FAQ for release 20071206

How do I install Guidance Explorer?

The Guidance Explorer files are simply in a zip file. Extract the zip file to any location on your file system and then run the Guidance Explorer binary to get started.

If I am using an old version of Guidance Explorer, how do I upgrade?

If you have not made any modifications to your Guidance Explorer library, you can delete the old version of Guidance Explorer and extract the new files to any location on your file system. Run the Guidance Explorer binary to get started.

If you have made modifications by creating your own library, views or items, then you can export your old views or library and then import the library into the new version of Guidance Explorer. Import and Export options are both available on the context menu in Guidance Explorer.

Can I keep using the old version of Guidance Explorer?

Yes, you can keep using it for as long as you'd like, however, you will no longer get library updates. If you want to see new content as it becomes available in the patterns & practices library then you must upgrade to this new version.

When I try to synchronize the 'pattern & practices Library' I get an error, what might be the issue?

Issue 1 - Key already exists
If you get an error stating the synchronization cannot complete because the key already exists, you need to upgrade to the latest build of Guidance Explorer. You can install it here - Cannot resolve release macro, invalid id.

Issue 2 - Web Proxy
If you get an error "Synchronization can't connect to the online store", then your Guidance Explorer is not able to access the online store. The most common issue is the user might be behind a web proxy.

For setting the proxy server information, open the GuidanceExplorer.exe.config for editing and add the web proxy server IP address as follows, please ensure you specify the port as well.
 <applicationSettings>
    <GuidanceExplorer.Properties.Settings>
      <setting name="GuidanceExplorer_OnlineGuidance_OnlineStorage_WebProxy"
          serializeAs="String">
        <value>0.0.0.0.0:80</value>
      </setting>
    </GuidanceExplorer.Properties.Settings>
  </applicationSettings>

Start GE and it should be able to connect to the online store

Your guidance server is now on MSDN, what does this mean for me?

If you are using the old Guidance Explorer, pointed at the old server, you will not receive library updates until you upgrade to a new release of Guidance Explorer.
Going forward, we’ll push all new guidance to the MSDN server.

How do I share a library with others?

There are three ways to share a library:

  6. Modify the GE app.config file to point to your GuidanceOnlineStorage instance

What's next for Guidance Explorer?

Let us know what you think of Guidance Explorer by posting on the forums for this project or send mail to getool@microsoft.com. We'll release an update in a couple of weeks to roll up any additional bug fixes or minor feature requests we get.

Next we will be focused on a version of Guidance Explorer that integrates with Visual Studio and we will look at updating the web version of Guidance Explorer

How do I subscribe to guidance as an RSS feed?

You can subscribe to a library or to a specific guidance type within a library.

Use this link to subscribe to the entire patterns & practices library - http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/guidanceexplorer/LibraryFeed.ashx?libraryId=e350438c-080d-4b8a-a82a-41397ce88e0e

Use this link to subscribe to all the guidelines in the patterns & practices library - http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/guidanceexplorer/LibraryFeed.ashx?libraryId=e350438c-080d-4b8a-a82a-41397ce88e0e&guidanceType=Guideline

You can replace Guideline in the url above with any other guidance type name to subscribe its feed.

These feeds are quite large, so your feed reader may take a while to get all the content.
